Located just minutes outside of Sequoia National Park in the town of Three Rivers, CA, this river trip is the perfect “excuse” to explore the area and take a mini-vacation.  But you don’t have to take my word for it. Just listen to guest, Debbie in our latest footage from the Kaweah:

The powers that be are telling us that the Kaweah River snowmelt is ON and this will be the highest water weekend!  Flows jumped up 700 CFS today alone. Time for you people in the Southern portion of our fair state to head north a bit and check out the Kaweah.  Flows will probably be highest Sun-Mon (4000+ CFS?!), so call the boss, get the day off, and  go check out the madness.

]]> http://blog.aorafting.com/high-water-update-kaweah-river-ready-to-rumble/feed/ 0 High Water on its way…….finally?? http://blog.aorafting.com/high-water-on-its-way-finally/ http://blog.aorafting.com/high-water-on-its-way-finally/#comments Wed, 02 Jun 2010 18:40:41 +0000 Malina http://blog.aorafting.com/?p=2623 It doesn’t take a genius with a degree in meteorology or geophysics or whatever to see that this spring the weather has been WHACK!  Hail, windstorms, humidity, rain, blazing sunshine, huge puffy clouds, grey haze and freezing nights.  We’ve been seeing it all.  And the weeds are LOVING it.  Bumper crop of furry-burries, star thistle and foxtails coming your way.  (Also vet bills if your animals are anything like mine and like getting pokey things in their eyeballs this time of year.)

Anyway, given all this roller-coaster action in the heavens I hesitate to say anything concrete about water flows and temperatures, but it does indeed seem to be heating up and unless things have really gone crazy and ice has a new melting temperature, that means the snowmelt is poised to begin.  Soon.  I’ll try to keep you up-to-date on what’s going off where, but for you highwater and adrenaline junkie types this is your moment.  At least I think it is.  We have lots of snow ready to melt and rush into rivers like the Kaweah (our crew is headed down early for a little extra highwater training tomorrow because we anticipate that river rising soon), the Tuolumne, and the Merced.  Our staff in Walnut Creek will have all the deets so give them a ring!

So farewell Kaweah and Three Rivers Hideaway!  We’ll be back, same time next year.

Based on the 2009 snowpack and current temperatures, we anticipate that this weekend, June 6-8, will be the last chance for rafting trips on the Kaweah River.  After that, flows will likely be too low for good whitewater.  HOWEVER!  There are some possible thunderstorms on the horizon that could very well extend the season by another week.  We’ll keep you posted. 

But, bottom line:  If you’re in the LA area and want a last-minute adventure close to home, check out the Kaweah while you still can!  Watch our Kaweah rafting video to see if this technical and high-speed run is for you.

Sunburns aside, one result of this funny weather is a stretched out season on the Kaweah River.  Super hot weather could render this update useless in a week, of course, but right now we think we have a good solid two weeks left.  Southern California rafters! Get a carpool together and head north!   Share gas money, get some snacks, and play 21 questions until you get to Three Rivers.  The Kaweah’s class III and IV whitewater have already given us some epic days–big surfs, tube-stands and even a flip or two.  Your group is sure to make some memories of its own . . . The Kaweah is good for that sort of thing.
