Late July Rafting Update

July 27th, 2010 by Malina

With the North Stan, North Fork American, Cal Salmon, Merced, and Kaweah Rivers but a distant memory, what’s a white water enthusiast to do?  Fold your cards, throw in the towel and head to the Lower American River for a boozy and soggy-sandwich filled float that ends with acid-reflux and a sunburn?  Not to bash that dream, but come on, there are better ideas out there.  The South and Middle Forks of the American the Tuolumne Rivers, thank you very much! Placerville Brewfest 2010

June 24th, 2010 by Malina

Ok so drinking and boating officially do not mix, but a little beer tasting after a South Fork of the American rafting trip?  That sounds like good times to me.

The annual Bell Tower Brewfest is held on Placerville’s Main Street this Saturday, June 26th.  P’ville (as we locals like to call it, I guess we’re plain lazy in the vocab dept.) is just 20 minutes from our River Office in Lotus so you can easily get there in time after a fun day on the river!

Tickets are $30 and get you tastes of more than 35 beers, live music and lots of local color.  Go to the Brewfest website to get more details!

(left: Now that’s a man-sized beer there.  And yes, that’s actually on Main Street. Oh small towns.  How I heart you.)

American River Music Festival 2010

June 16th, 2010 by Malina

For those of you who like to plan ahead ( I myself am none too familiar with this activity, it’s just not my thing) for a little fun (ok , that I do like, and will even begin to work on early)…..

The dates for the 2010 American River Music Festival are set!  This is what, the third or fourth year of the festival, and I’m sure it’s back bigger and better than ever.  Tons of stages! Shuttles! Music on the river, ’round the campfire, and in the canyon!  Rafting and hiking on the South fork of the American River! Facepainting for kids!  Sunshine and love!

Learn more at the festival website and put Sept 17, 18, and 19 on your calendar!

Trailfest 2010 Coming Up June 7th

May 25th, 2010 by Malina

Trailfest always comes around a little earlier than I expect.  This year is no exception!  Come on out and have a great time while also supporting one of the best causes in our community–the American River Conservancy.

Trailfest 2010 will be held June 7th, at Earthtrek’s camp on the South Fork of the American River.  (Speaking of the SF, flows are great right now–3500-4000 CFS–and this would be the perfect add on to a Sunday trip.  Check out our Rapid Deals page to see if there any discounts around the 7th!)

Tickets are 30 bucks and that gets you dinner provided by local restaurants, two drinks, live entertainment, and a silent auction.  I’m personally very excited because this year I get to help the chef of my favorite restaurant, Cafe Mahjaic!  I don’t think I get to wear a chef’s hat though…

For more info, go the the Trailfest 2010 page of the ARC Website.

November California Rafting Flow Update

November 4th, 2009 by Malina

ampitheaterAh November.   She finds us cleaning gear, ordering replacement parts, fixing paddles, rolling and storing boats….and yes, still available to raft the South Fork with hardy souls willing to brave lower temperatures so they can see the changing colors and experience a quiet and private day on the water!  We’re game if you are!

Tasty Treats at Local Winery after South Fork Rafting

October 1st, 2009 by Malina

magnum-glass-viewAs a local of course I never take advantage of cool things that are going on in town (Why is that anyway?  Do I seriously want to drive and pay money to have a good time like that will make it more fun??  Good for capitalism, not so good for the ol’ checking account.  Anyway, I digress but I don’t think I’m alone here.) but since you’re not a local you can go for it…

So on October 17th, come on up to Lotus, raft the South Fork American, book at room at one of our lovely local B & Bs (try the Bella Vista or the Coloma Country Inn in the Coloma valley), and then start a relaxing evening by doing some wine tasting at David Girard Vineyards, just 5 minutes up the road from the All-Outdoors River Center.  On the 17th Girard will be hosting not only wine tasting but also “amuse-bouche” appetizers catered by Bocca

Wine Tasting and Whitewater

September 17th, 2009 by Malina

Fall is a very civilized time to come visit the Gold Country–no summer mayhem, barges of screaming water-fighters, massive party boats…..

ovrvwYou get all the thrills of summer but with more peace and quiet in between.  This is also a great time to check out other gems of this area:  a delicious dinner at Cafe Mahjaic, a peaceful evening at the Eden Vale Inn, and an afternoon wine tasting the day after a fun trip down the American River.  Local wineries include Venezio, Gold Hill Vineyards and David Girard–they’re all within 5 minutes of the South Fork American.  Just a little further up the road are all the Apple Hill wineriesdad and debbie with favorite places like Boeger, Madrona, and Lava Cap.   Pack a picnic, buy a chilled bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, and relax in Boeger’s lovely grounds for a truly relaxing day…..

American River Festival 2009

September 8th, 2009 by Malina

Get ready to celebrate all things American River this September at the American River pageimage_imginfo_10Festival!  The annual event is held on the banks of the South Fork American River every September and includes all kinds of whitewater events:  a raft race, kayak rodeo, slalom race, kids events, and of course a rockin’ dinner and party on Saturday night.

Besides being a lot of fun for boaters and whitewater enthusiasts of all stripes, the American River Festival also raises money for good causes like the American River Conservancy and the Tuolumne River Trust.  So what’s not to love??  What a cool addition to raft trip on the South or Middle Fork that weekend!

The event kicks off on September 11th (this weekend!) and continues through the weekend.  Learn more about this year’s festival at the River Store’s website.

California Rafting: Mid-August Flow Update

August 12th, 2009 by Malina

tomc09With a few weeks to go of the “high season” for California rafting, the news is all good.  Flows have been lovely all across the board–from the gentle riffles of our class II Tom Sawyer Float Trips on the South Fork of the American River, to the boat-eating gigantor hydraulics of Cherry Creek, which is as tough as California Rafting gets.

At this point in the season, we are only rafting dam-controlled rivers: the South and Middle Forks of the American River, the Tuolumne River, and Cherry Creek.  All of these runs have tightly controlled water levels because of their upstream dams and reservoirs.  For us–and you!– this means continuing raftable flows all summer long, and lots of different rafting itineraries.
