Tuolumne After a Storm, Day 2

The next morning began with our hike back into the canyon. We were all hoping that the water had gone down enough to ensure that our journey out would be by boat that day instead of foot. Once back to the rafts we were happy to see that everything had remained intact. The river, however, still raged with all its might. The Clavey itself had gone down quite a bit, though, which meant that we might be able to get across its currents and take a sneak route down the right side of the rapid. Again, all the guides scrambled to higher ground to get a better look while we sat nervous at the water’s frothing edge.

Tuolumne After A Storm, Day 1

So there we were…

All of us gathered at Casa Loma after a night of dinner and drinks in the happening town of Groveland. It was raining outside and the river level in the canyon below us just kept rising and rising. Our spirits were really high- a lot of us hadn’t seen each other all winter long and we were itching to get back out on the river after months of winter captivity.

Hell or High Water

For anyone who loves rafting this is a valid question- hell being equivalent to zero water and high water being, well, high water. So, as winter finally begins in earnest here in California, we wait and pray for the same type of winter we had last season.

Although storms raged all winter long last year, it was in February that we first began to understand what we were in for. Every time I drove east on Hwy 50 I saw the Sierras completely covered white with snow, and reports were coming in of 150% snowpack in Yosemite, 175% further South in Sequoia National Park. No matter how hot it might get in March or April-

We were going to have a high water year.
