Where in the World is AO? Pura Vida en Costa Rica!

February 13th, 2013 by Amy diVittorio

Dave and Jason, Playa Uvita, Costa Rica

Seems we may have a migratory pattern evolving with our AO staff.  Ever since Pam, former guide and manager of AO’s Merced operation, established a unique beach-side hostel in Playa Uvita, Costa Rica the AO migration has only increased. It’s no coincidence she calls it The Flutterby House. We’ve got AO guides migrating there like a bunch of Monarchs.

While many AO folks of past and present have visited, two of AO’s favorites are spending their winters “working” at Pam’s brain child. In the Spring Dave manages the North Stanislaus River and in the hot summer months he’ll guide you down Clavey Falls on the T or drive you up the narrow Middle Fork take-out road (beads of sweat dripping from his brow!). But today, my friends, he is on a much-deserved stay-cation. He is reported to be as  giddy as a carefree 12 year old whose biggest concern is fitting in surf sessions in between fresh ceviche, karaoke en español, and a little “work”.  Seems Dave has really taken to heart the local saying in Costa Rica, “Pura vida” (pure life).

Dave and Jason donning AO threads!

Also roughing it the tropics is Jason, one of our favorite South Fork/Middle Fork  guides. Armed with some Rosetta Stone Spanish lessons and a smile  Jason is learning about toros, purrujas, and surfing(ocean-style).

We miss them both and can’t wait to see them in April for early season rafting.

Where in the World is AO? The Gorges du Verdun

July 3rd, 2012 by Malina

Quelle jolie scene!  Here we have AO reservationsist Emily’s mom sporting a classic AO Discover shirt during a recent trip to Europe!   Alas, the lovely duo wasn’t able to raft–the water was too low, proving once again that we all have more in common than we think on this small planet–but they did get to go on a hike at least.  If you’re traveling to a drought riddled region take your AO rafting gear with you anyway and send me the proof at malina at aorafting.com

Where in the World is AO? Dublin, Ireland!

April 17th, 2012 by Malina

Raise a pint for AO rafting reservationist Emily who, as we see, is taking in the sights in fair Dublin in style!  St. Paddy’s Day in the heartland of everything Shamrock–talk about luck o’ the Irish–and AO was there to see it all.   Apparently this lovely tee was literally the only scrap of Green Miss Emily had, so AO was there to save the day.  If your AO recently kept you out of trouble send me the proof at malina @ aorafting.com. Slainte!

Where in the World is AO? Gay Paree, again!

Apparently AO likes zee French (who doesn’t, let’s be honest.  Ok maybe the lactose intolerant and those with celiac disease.  Also teetotallers.  And people afraid of mimes.  Anyway.), because for the second time, I present, AO en France!  And not just en France, but by le Tour Eiffel!  Oh la la! Here  river guide  Britt F shows off her AO-ness in style.  If you are headed to Paris anytime soon leave your AO behind and take me instead!  I’m kidding,  send me the proof (and a bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau, s’il vous plait!) to malina at AOrafting.com

Where in the World is AO? Hanging with the Prez…..

September 29th, 2011 by Malina

Ah yes, Mt Rushmore.  That paragon of Americana, good taste, and Ode to the Executive Branch.  And now, a new addition: Noonies. Perhaps you recognize him from Cherry Creek?  Didn’t know he loves the Midwest though, right? Neither did we. . . but are thrilled at this contribution to the collection. If you’ve taken your AO to the Corn Museum, or maybe to Graceland, put down your Moon Pie, turn off the National Anthem, and send me a picture!  I happily await your patriotic contribution to the Where in the World is AO collection at malina @ aorafting.com

Where in the World is AO? Marrakesh!

September 9th, 2011 by Jeremy

Where in the World is AO?

Still on a bumpy ride, just a lot slower and a lot more dry! My last stop on the voyage this summer has taken me to Morocco. After porting in Casablanca, I took a train to Marrakesh and found myself riding a camel through the desert for 30 minutes! Although it’s more unique than riding a raft down a river, the thrill is a lot less short-lived.

With that being said, it was about 110 degrees in Marrakesh and I would have killed for a little fresh, California water splashing over me! On my camel (she was named LuLu), I rocked my green, Godfather-style AO shirt as a guide led us through obstacles and down a pre-determined course. Okay, so the parallels to rafting are a bit of a reach.

As I mentioned, Morocco was our last port, so I’m currently involved with plenty of rough water. The Atlantic Ocean doesn’t want us to come home and it is doing its best to rock and roll us right back to Africa. But, after a long, amazing summer, I’ll be back home at AO headquarters in no time answering phones and helping you reserve your own trip of a lifetime! And I can promise you’ll get a much bigger adrenaline rush out of riding some of California’s best rapids with AO than trying to keep your balance on LuLu the camel.

Where in the World is AO? The Open Sea!

June 29th, 2011 by Jeremy

…in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean? I’m taking a break from the phones for a couple months and finishing my second college degree aboard this ship, bound for travel around the Mediterranean for just over six weeks! After eight long days at sea on the MV Explorer, Semester at Sea’s floating college campus, we have finally reached the Strait of Gibraltar. It is our gateway to the port of Barcelona, which will be the first stop of a tour that includes porting at Naples, Rome, Dubrovnik, Athens and Casablanca.

Anyway, I’ve been representing All-Outdoors and proudly wearing my forest green, Godfather-inspired tee from the 7th deck swimming area to my tiny cabin on deck 3 to this observation deck. The waters out here on the Atlantic are choppy enough that it’s physically impossible for any of the 676 students from 290 universities to walk in a straight line for more than a few feet. And I’ve definitely seen some rolling waves out here that rival the Miracle Mile on Cherry Creek.

But hey, at least on the rivers I can see land! I am happy to report that whenever any of my new friends have asked about my job at home, and they hear that I work for All-Outdoors, I’ve gotten awesome feedback. Alex from Colorado, one of the guys I met on move-in day, even went so far as to say that our discussion convinced him to come out to California after the trip and brave the upper T with some of his friends!

I’m having the time of my life so far (we sailed through the very beginning of the Strait earlier; we could see Africa on the starboard side, Europe on the port side!), but amid all these distractions, I’ve still taken a few moments to give AO a well-deserved plug to potential customers from all around the world! Hopefully the weather is still holding up in the Golden State and everyone in the AO family is enjoying a few more high-water runs…stay tuned for an update after four days in Spain!

(If you’ve taken your AO somewhere noteworthy–Bering Straits? Isthmus of Kra?  Send your pic to Malina@aorafting.com and get your moment of notoriety on the AO blog!)

Where in the World is AO? Rafting on dry land…..

August 17th, 2010 by Malina

AO guides Mason and Hilary met on our South Fork of the American operation and decided to make it a season without end.  They are engaged and ready for the river of life…….Here they are, two lovebirds who are so enamoured of their rafting love story they busted out the full regalia of river gear right in their house.  Hilary is rockin’ the  infamous 1980s AO ”I survived Tunnel Chute” shirt.  If you met your one and only on a rafting trip with AO, invite us to your wedding (order extra food and bevvies–we know how to party) and send a pic of the two of you to Malina at aorafting.com

Where in the World is AO? Vegas, Baby!

May 3rd, 2010 by Malina

A couple years ago we had an Ethiopian invasion here in Lotus!   We enjoyed the company of two brothers and a friend of theirs for a summer.  Alas, river life couldn’t keep them here forever, but our Office Manager Claudette went and visited Josef and Dereje recently and sent me the proof!  If you’re a high-roller send me a ticket to Vegas and some lucky dice (printed with AO, as always) to Malina at AOrafting.com

Where in the World is AO? Vietnam!

March 11th, 2010 by Malina

A dispatch from Southeast Asia!  We here at AO leave no corner of the globe unturned, it seems.  This is AO rafting guide Jared K, on a recent trip to Sapa, Vietnam.  Hangin’ with the local Hmong villagers in his AO t-shirt.  That’s what I call a smart packer.  If you recently spent some time in mainland Southeast Asia, send me one of those awesome jackets (and a picture of you in your AO, of course!) to malina at aorafting.com
