American River Benefit Concert July 25th 2008

I was just talking to a friend about the idea of “volunteer vacations,” whereby you go on vacation but do something good too–like help rebuild an area affected by a natural disaster or do conservation work and the like.  Then I came across a cool concert being held at one of our local wineries and I thought presto!  It’s a whitewater volunteer vacation!  It’s actually sort of far afield like most things in my brain, but bear with me: the deal is this.  Sean Hayes is doing a benefit concert to raise funds for the American River Conservancy, which works to preserve riparian environments and balance recreation and preservation goals here in the Coloma-Lotus Valley.  The concert, which features singer-songwriter Sean Hayes, is being held at David Girard Winery, just a few miles from our home base in Lotus next to the South Fork American River.  My “volunteer vacation” idea is to come up on Friday for the concert, and then raft the next day on the river you’re helping to protect.  For a place to stay overnight, look into the Lotus Inn (right next door to our meet spot) or camp at Camp Lotus, just a mile away.  For details on the concert visit David Girard Winery’s website.
