River Guides By Summer, Snowmen By Winter
Posted January 14, 2006 by Robyn SuddethGranted, our lives may not be as interesting to you as we like to think. But I do often get the question in my boat, “So, what do you do in the winter time?” Well, to answer it personally I’m still working for All-Outdoors in the reservations office. But I’m not really the most interesting of stories. Other guides go back to college, some become ski patrol or ski instructors in Tahoe, and some… well, some become snow-making magicians. Yup that’s right- Brad Riley and Adam Walker traded in oars and paddles for ice and bubbles. You can find some of their latest masterpieces at the Polar Bear exhibits in the Los Angeles and Sacramento Zoos. If you ever ask them about it, though, make sure not to imply that they are merely men who create fake snow. They like to think of themselves as magicians and are pretty sensitive to such mistaken identifications. Amazingly, the demand for their magic has taken them not only all over the United States but to Guatemala and Mexico as well. Can’t wait for some great stories around the campfire next summer!
