AO guide Michael explains what to wear and how to gear up for a fall rafting trip so you can get maximum enjoyment out of your day on the river, in style!
To a large extent, your river attire for a fall rafting trip in California should include the same items that you would wear for rafting during the summer. Typical fall weather in the Sierra Nevada foothills is sunny and warm. Days could be just as hot as in the height of the summer.
However, as we get into October, the afternoon shadows get longer and overcast skies are more common. Fall is one of the best times of the year to go rafting in California (What Makes California Rafting in the Fall Special?), but you want to be ready for the potential of cooler days and even the possibility of rain showers. Here is what you should wear for your fall rafting trip:
- Swimsuit or another moisture wicking base layer.
- Quick-drying shorts.
- Quick-drying top and possibly another mid-weight layer to wear under the splash jacket (if needed).
- Wetsuits may be recommended or required depending on the weather on the day of your trip, so be ready to wear one provided by us or pack one in the car with you.
- Wool, fleece, or neoprene socks
- Close-toed athletic shoes
- Sunglasses on a strap
